Celebrating Community and Innovation: How 3D Printing is Making a Difference in Charleston, West Virginia

At Cartridge World Cyprus, we believe in the power of technology to bring communities closer and support meaningful causes. That’s why this story from Charleston, West Virginia, caught our attention - a perfect example of how 3D printing can blend tradition, innovation, and charity in a truly inspiring way.

Charleston, WV, a city rich with history and resilience, is now becoming a leader in 3D printing and additive manufacturing. To showcase this progress, a local flexible manufacturing institute partnered with the Charleston Daily Mail and several charities to create a special holiday ornament. This ornament isn’t just any decoration - it’s a beautifully detailed, 3D printed replica of West Virginia’s iconic capitol building’s gold dome, a symbol deeply woven into the state’s heritage.

The gold dome stands 300 feet tall and features intricate Greek and Roman architectural influences. It represents West Virginia’s unique history and spirit, dating back to its establishment in 1863 amid the turmoil of the Civil War. The capitol building itself, dedicated in 1932 and located in Charleston, serves as a proud reminder of the state’s journey and values.

This initiative by the Charleston Daily Mail highlights not only the region’s rich past but also its bright economic future. The ornament project is a collaboration between local universities, government officials, businesses, and charities - demonstrating how 3D printing can support community development and innovation simultaneously.

Designed by Ron Cabacar, an engineer at Marshall University’s Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing, the ornament was produced using advanced 3D printers, which completed the batch of 200 ornaments in several hours. The design intentionally emphasizes the 3D printing process, with the spherical dome emerging prominently - an artistic nod to the technology behind it.

More importantly, this project raises funds for local charities such as the Daily Mail’s Neediest Cases Appeal and Gazette Charities, which provide crucial support to residents facing economic hardships and nonprofit organizations focusing on health, education, and the arts. Last year, the initiative raised $1,500, directly benefiting these causes.

At Cartridge World Cyprus, we are inspired by how 3D printing can create tangible benefits beyond just innovation - helping communities thrive while advancing sustainable and eco-friendly manufacturing. We share the same customer-focused philosophy: delivering clear, reliable solutions that meet your needs while supporting a better future.

Whether you are exploring printing options for personal, business, or community projects, know that embracing new technologies like 3D printing can unlock creativity, efficiency, and positive social impact. Let’s celebrate these innovative strides together, inspired by stories like Charleston’s, where history and technology beautifully intersect for the greater good.
